HTX Swims coaching staff are professionals who have dedicated their life to the sport of swimming. We are coaches, swimmers, swammers, and parents of swimmers.

HTX Swims coaches are USA Swimming registered and certified. All coaches have current background checks, Athlete Protection Training, USA Swimming Safe Sport Trained and CPR/First Aid Certified.

Meet the Founders

HTX SWIMS was founded by Coach Jason Wedlick and Coach Mike Nordmann. It was and remains our vision to offer a quality swim program for all levels focused inside the inner loop of Houston.

  • Owner

    Jason Wedlick is a veteran swim coach and founder of HTX Swims, a year-round program focused on technical development and community engagement. With over 20 years of coaching experience in Houston, he previously led RICE Aquatics to national recognition and currently serves as Head Coach of the Lodge 88 Lionfish and Head Varsity Coach at St. John’s School. Jason is known for his athlete-first approach, developing swimmers from beginner levels to collegiate competition, and has held leadership roles with Gulf Swimming and USA Swimming's Club Development Committee.

    JMichael Nordmann is the Competitive Program Director and a founding coach at HTX Swims, bringing over 26 years of experience in developing swimmers from age group to national levels. Originally from Missouri, he competed as a Senior National qualifier and All-Conference athlete at the University of Utah. Since relocating to Houston in 2007, Michael has held key coaching roles at The Woodlands Swim Team, Cypress Fairbanks Swim Club, and Magnolia Aquatic Club, where he served as Interim Head Coach and helped the team achieve USA Swimming Gold Medal Club status. His athletes have earned titles at TAGS, Sectionals, and Junior Nationals, with many advancing to NCAA competition.Michael has also contributed to Gulf Swimming as a board member and coach for regional and national teams. He and his wife, Dr. Amy Sullivan Nordmann, have four daughters—all competitive swimmers, including two who swam at Stanford University

  • Jason Wedlick

    Coach | Owner | Learn 2 Swim and USA Bridge Program Director

    Jason is excited to continue to offer swim programming to the greater Houston area. He utilizes thoughtful technique-driven coaching to swimmers ages four and older. For the past 20 years, Jason has worked with Houston swimmers of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

    Much of Jason’s extensive experience comes from his last 15 years as Head Coach for RICE Aquatics. Under his leadership, the team has grown to over 200 swimmers, achieving new excellence levels and developing into the top 200 ranked USA swim team. Jason is most proud of the lasting relationships built with hundreds of swimmers and families that have stepped on the deck looking to try the sport of swimming and a community of families that have grown into a large swim family.

    Jason’s ability to implement proper stroke techniques and mechanics while keeping the atmosphere fun and enjoyable for the swimmers has allowed his athletes to achieve success at all levels of competition.

    • Numerous National, Jr National, Sectional, State qualifiers.

    • Ten of his swimmers competed for their college teams at conference or NCAA Championship meets this past year alone.

    • Admin Vice-Chair of GULF Swimming Board of Directors 2014-2018

    • USA Swimming National Committee for Club Development 2014 - 2018.

    • Has served on multiple committees and select coaching of the Gulf All-Star team, Gulf Zone team, and "Catch the Spirit" camps

  • Michael Nordmann

    Coach | Founder | Competitive Program Director

    Senior and Age Group Coach

    Coach Nordmann is a Missouri native that comes to HTX Swim with over 26 years of coaching experience. Moving to Houston in 2007, Michael has worked with The Woodlands Swim Team, the Cypress Fairbanks Swim Club, and most recently, the Magnolia Aquatic Club.

    Nordmann swam in St. Louis with the Sugar Creek Swim Club, CSP Tideriders & Rockwood Swim Club. A Senior National qualifier, Nordmann competed for the University of Utah, where he was an All-Conference athlete.

    Nordmann served Magnolia in many roles. Head Age Group Coach to Senior Team Coach, Associate Head Coach, and Interim Head Coach. Mike guided Magnolia to Level 4 in USA Club Recognition Program and Recognized Club status from USA Safe Sport. Mike’s athletes have TAGS, Sectional, and Junior National titles. Many members have gone on to represent schools in NCAA competitions.

    As a leader in Gulf Swimming, Michael volunteered his time and efforts on the Board of Directors Executive Committee, holding such positions as Coaches Representative, Records Coordinator, Club Development Liaison, and Awards Committee. Nordmann coached athletes at North American Challenge Cup, LSC Open Water Championships, and the Southern Zone Age Group Championships.

    Coach Nordmann is married to Amy Sullivan Nordmann (a 3-time NCAA National Champion in volleyball), a physician, specializing in the early detection of breast cancer. Michael and Amy have four daughters, Lucie and Lillie; both swim for Stanford University. Mary and Zoe swim with the Magnolia Aquatic Club and represent The Woodlands High School.

    When not swimming, Michael enjoys listening to music, watching movies, and hanging out with his dogs, Phoebe and Louie.

  • Carlon MCclerkin

    Coach | Lead Age Group Coach Comp 1 & 3

    Age Group Coach

    Carlon MCclerkin is a Houston, Tx native who comes to HTX Swims after an extensive swimming background in USA Swimming (HCAP) and HISD (Lamar High School). Carlon has been swimming competitively since the age of four with Harris County Aquatics Program (HCAP). Carlon turned his focus to swimming once he achieved multiple TAGS standards as an age grouper. . From that point forward, he fell in love with the sport of swimming. Carlon is currently a part of the 4x400 freestyle relay record for Lamar High School.

    Carlon pursued his swimming at the collegiate level at Barton County Community College and then transferred to Lindenwood University. Carlon is currently enrolled in the University Of Houston in the Global Hospitality and Leadership Program and wants to pursue a career in aquatic Sports.

    In addition to HTX Swims Carlon is currently apart of the Swimming staff for The Awty School.

  • Jean Gomez

    Coach | Lead Age Group Coach Comp 2 & High School Conditioning

    Assistant Age Group Coach

    Coach Jean is natve of the Dominican Republic where he was a member of the National Team for swimming. Jean brings experience coaching all levels of swimming and competing at the international level to HTX Swims. Jean most recently worked with the club youth program in the Dominican as well being an assistant at the same university he trined for as an athlete.

    Jean and his wife are both former natioal team membrs who have a passion for swimming.

  • Hobie Huston

    Coach | Lesson Program | Bridge Program @ Heights

    Coach Hobie works with the USA Bridge Program in the Heights and is a Lead Instructor for the Lesson Program at Lodge 88. Coach Hobie has years of experience on the pre-competitive side of swimming having previously been the Lead Flight School coach at RICE Aquatics and Program Director of Katy Aquatics Swim-America program.

    Senior Assistant Coach

    Coach Hanna comes to HTX Swims from RICE Aquatics where she spent this past season coaching the Senior program as well as 12-14 year old age groupers.Hanna had instant success as a senior-level coach with swimmers achieving new Sectional, Futures and Junior qualification times. Hanna has spent her first two years working with all levels of the program emphasizing her enthusiasm, stroke awareness and technical coaching to the swimmers. Former Owl star Hanna Huston spent three seasons as an assistant swim coach at her alma mater RICE University and recently was named the first Head Mens and Womens Swim Coach for St Thomas University.

    Hanna Huston closed out her collegiate career in 2019 as one of the top distance swimmers in school history, recording a best of 16:33.37 in the mile, a time of 10:00.91 in the 1000-freestyle, and 4:49.90 in the 500. In addition to scoring for the Owls every year at the Conference USA Championships, she finished third overall at the 2017 CSCAA Collegiate National Open Water Championships in Kansas. Later that same season she was a Top 8 finisher in the 1650-free at the CSCAA National Invitational (often nicknamed the 'Swimming N.I.T.').

    Huston was a regular member of the C-USA Academic Honor Roll throughout her collegiate career. She was also the 2017 recipient of the program's Kathryn Scholl True Blue Spirit Award, which is presented annually to the Owl who "has shown dedication, discipline, and leadership, but most importantly, has been an inspiration to her teammates with her consistent hard work and commitment to the team concept." In her final semester as a Rice student-athlete, Huston was recognized by Conference USA as one of the league's Spirit of Service Award winners for her various community outreach initiatives. While at Rice she was a member of Jones College

  • Katie Callan-Wherle

    Coach

    Senior Assistant

    Coach Katie Callan-Wherle joins HTX Swims with over 25 years of coaching experience nationwide. A native of Detroit, she swam summer league, club, high school, and college before earning degrees in physiology and education. In addition to coaching, Katie spent 15 years teaching health sciences in the classroom.

    Most recently, Katie coached at Magnolia Aquatic Club, where she led pre-national and national teams and helped the team achieve USA Swimming Gold Medal Club status. She’s coached at the National Select Team Camp (2018) and especially valued the team unity built through MAC’s Jingle Bells Relay event.

    Katie has held key roles at Crimson Aquatics Boston/North Shore and was a founding coach at Trident Aquatics in Tulsa, where she coached her nephew, 2021 Olympian Patrick Callan. She’s also coached deaf and blind athletes on Paralympic and Deaf Olympic teams.

    Katie lives in Magnolia with her husband and son. Her passion for coaching matches her advocacy for inclusive learn-to-swim programs, especially for children with special needs.

  • Keira Wedlick

    Coach | Assistant Lionfish Summer League Coach

    Keira Wedlick is an Assistant Coach for the Lodge 88 Lionfish Summer League Swim Team in Houston, Texas. Growing up immersed in the world of swimming, Keira began her journey in the pool at the age of six having been poolside most of her life with a swim coach as a parent.

    Throughout her competitive swimming career, Keira trained with RICE Aquatics and HTX Swims, where she honed her skills across various strokes and distances.

    Keira is a proud graduate of DeBakey High School for Health Professions, where she balanced rigorous academics with her commitment to swimming. In the fall, she will be attending Texas A&M University, embarking on the next chapter of her academic and athletic journey.

    As a coach, Keira brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the sport to the Lionfish team. Her approach emphasizes technique, discipline, and fostering a love for swimming among young athletes. With her background and passion, Keira is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of swimmers and contributing to the team’s continued success.

  • Mikel Armellini

    Assistant Lionfish Coach / Swim Lesson Instructor

    Mieko Armellini returns to the pool deck this summer with a rich background in competitive swimming and coaching. A product of the RICE Aquatics program, Mieko progressed through the program, crediting those years as formative both personally and athletically. While she paused competitive swimming during high school to spend a year abroad in Costa Rica, she has continued to stay active in the sport—most recently completing the Ironman 70.3 in Galveston as part of her passion for triathlons.

    Mieko also brings hands-on coaching and teaching experience from her time at Gigglin’ Marlin Swim School, where she worked with swimmers of all ages—from Mommy & Me classes to competitive athletes. Her favorite part of coaching is helping swimmers refine their technique and mindset, a skill she developed from years of valuing detailed feedback as an athlete herself.

    Now studying at McGill University in Montreal, Mieko is spending her summer break (May through mid-August) back in Houston and is excited to join the coaching staff as a part-time coach or instructor. With a thoughtful, supportive approach, she looks forward to helping each swimmer grow in confidence and skill this season.
